Hypercholesterolaemia

Data gathering

  • Red flags – chest pain, sob
  • Others – diet, exercise, smoking
  • Examine – BP, CV, BMI

 

Clinical management

  • Investigations
    • Bloods – fasting cholesterol, HbA1c, LFTs, U+E, TFTs
  • Explanation
    • High cholesterol leads to fatty plaques in your blood vessels which in turn lead to higher risk of heart disease, strokes etc
  • Treatment
    • Lifestyle: diet, alcohol, smoking, weight and exercise – 30 mins moderate intensity for 5 days (get a sweat/heart racing)
    • Medication – atorvastatin 20mg ON (if qrisk >10%)
  • Follow-up – repeat LFTs in 3 months then yearly
