Differential diagnosis

  • Ophthalmological causes
    • Lid or eyelash – Styes, Meibomian cysts, Blepharitis, Trichiasis
    • Anterior chamber – Conjunctivitis, Corneal ulcers, Keratitis, Iritis, Scleritis, Acute glaucoma, Foreign body, Corneal abrasion
  • Others
    • Neurology – Migraine, Cluster headaches, Space occupying lesion
    • ENT – Acute sinusitis
    • Others – Temporal arteritis, Periorbital cellulitis, Ophthalmic shingles

 

Data gathering

  • Red flags – contact lenses, visual loss, photophobia, fever, trauma, red eye, vomiting, flashes, floaters
  • Others – gritty sensation, discharge, headaches, optician, driving
  • Examine – Inspection (regular, equal pupils), acuity, fields, eye movements, pupil reflexes, temporal palpation, BP
