Data gathering

  • Red flags – headache/jaw pain/visual changes/tiredness/muscle weakness/fever
  • Others
  • Examine – temporal artery palpation, CN exam, fundoscopy

 

Clinical management

  • Investigations
    • Bloods – ESR
  • Explanation
    • condition caused by inflammation arteries on the side of the head
  • Treatment
    • High dose steroids (prednisolone 60mg, tapering over months)
    • Aspirin 75mg
    • Refer to vascular surgeons (temporal artery biopsy)
  • Follow-up / Safety net
