Data gathering

  • Red flags – mood, urine incontinence
  • Others – stiffness, tremor, walking, handwriting, balance, speech
  • Examine – inspection, rigidity, gait, handwriting, quick neuro (if appropriate)

 

Clinical management

  • Explanation
    • PD affects the way the body coordinates movements, main features are slow movement, tremor, stiffness
  • Treatment
    • Refer neurology – initial assessment and treatment
    • Special services – physio, OT, speech therapy, specialist nurse, dietician
    • Medications to help with symptoms (dopamine agonists or monoamine oxidase inhibitors)
    • Surgery – deep brain stimulation
  • Follow-up / Safety net
    • DVLA
