Clinical management

  • Explanation
    • cells in the prostate become abnormal and multiple out of control.
  • Treatment:
    • Radical prostatectomy
    • Radiotherapy, chemotherapy
    • Brachytherapy
    • Hormone treatment
  • PSA testing
    • Blood test to measure a chemical made by the prostate called the prostate specific antigen
    • PSA is raised in some conditions – prostate cancer, BPH, urinary infection, recent examination of prostate, exercise, ejaculation
    • PSA naturally rises as men get older and prostate gland gets bigger
    • 2 out of 3 people with raised PSA will not have prostate cancer
    • If not raised, unlikely prostate cancer
    • If mildly raised, likely not to be cancer but needs monitoring
    • If very elevated, patient to be referred
  • Normal ranges:
    • <3 – 50yo
    • <4 – 60yo
    • <5 – 70yo
  • 2ww if:
    • PR – clinically malignant prostate
    • raised/rising PSA
