- cells in the prostate become abnormal and multiple out of control.
- Treatment:
- Radical prostatectomy
- Radiotherapy, chemotherapy
- Brachytherapy
- Hormone treatment
- PSA testing
- Blood test to measure a chemical made by the prostate called the prostate specific antigen
- PSA is raised in some conditions – prostate cancer, BPH, urinary infection, recent examination of prostate, exercise, ejaculation
- PSA naturally rises as men get older and prostate gland gets bigger
- 2 out of 3 people with raised PSA will not have prostate cancer

- If not raised, unlikely prostate cancer
- If mildly raised, likely not to be cancer but needs monitoring
- If very elevated, patient to be referred
- Normal ranges:
- <3 – 50yo
- <4 – 60yo
- <5 – 70yo
- 2ww if:
- PR – clinically malignant prostate
- raised/rising PSA
