Ferritin

Raised serum ferritin

  • Transferrin saturation < 45%
    • Consider: Infection, inflammation, alcohol, diabetes, BMI, haematological disease
    • Ferritin > 450 mcg/L
      • Repeat ferritin and transferrin saturation after 1 month
        • If still high
          • USS liver/abdo
          • Bloods – FBC, film, reticulocytes, haptoglobin, LFTs, HbA1c, TFTs
          • Refer to hepatology (attach results)
    • Ferritin < 450 mcg/L
      • Repeat ferritin and transferrin saturation after 3 months
      • If normal – can stop monitoring and manage contributing factor
  • Transferrin saturation > 45%
    • Refer to hepatology
